Senate Committee Confirms Montgomery Nomination
The Senate Committee on Banking, Housing, and Urban Affairs recently confirmed Brian Montgomery’s nomination to become Deputy Secretary of HUD. The committee approved Montgomery, who is HUD Assistant Secretary for Housing and FHA Commissioner and currently also serving as Acting Deputy Secretary, by a voice vote of 20–5. The nomination now will progress to the full Senate for a vote. Ranking Member Sherrod Brown (D-OH), Jack Reed (D-RI), Elizabeth Warren (D-MA), Catherine Cortez Masto (D-NV), and Tina Smith (D-MN) opposed Montgomery’s nomination.
Brown voiced his concern about Montgomery’s leadership during his current tenure at HUD, specifically citing Montgomery’s lack of public opposition to the Trump administration’s proposed funding cuts for CDBG and HOME affordable housing programs. The seven other Democrats on the committee joined the Republican members in voting to confirm Montgomery. The committee also confirmed David Woll to be HUD Assistant Secretary of the Office of Community Planning and Development and John Bobbitt to be HUD Assistant Secretary for Administration, both by voice vote.
